Postcards from Rossier on the Road

Hawaii USC Rossier on the Road

USC Rossier School of Education was on the road over the last several months, hosting gatherings across the country for alumni and friends. In the first in the series of Rossier events, Trojans turned out in great numbers for a special Rossier reception in Hawaii in July.  Nearly 125 Rossier alumni and students came out for the event representing graduates who have gone on to  fields as diverse as the U.S. military and the Honolulu Police Department,  the Department of Education, and public and private K-12 and higher education. Representatives from the Hawaii Alumni Club also joined the party, as well as USC Board of Governors Asian Pacific Alumni Association Representative Rod Nakamoto.

A number of Rossier faculty traveled from L.A. to attend the Honolulu gathering, including Robert Rueda, Larry Picus, Melora Sundt, Darnell Cole, Brandon Martinez, John Pascarella, and Kathy Stowe, and staff members Linda Fischer, Anne Wicks, and Kalim Rayburn.  Most of the guests were former or current students of the Hawaii cohort for Rossier’s EdD program, which is based on-site in Honolulu and has been preparing education leaders in Hawaii since the 1970s.

In September, Rossier on the Road headed east to kick off the USC v. Syracuse game with a reception in New York, which brought together 35 alumni, students and prospective students in the area, including Kimberly Lewis, a student in Rossier’s new Global Executive EdD program. Then, Rossier hosted a pre-game meet up in San Francisco before the USC v. Stanford game, with a significant turnout of alumni and education leaders from throughout the Bay Area, including area alumni Don Leisey, Robin Berg and Ursula Edman.

Finally, in October, Rossier on the Road stopped in Dean Gallagher’s hometown of Seattle prior to the USC v. Washington game for a visit with alumni and friends there. The reception was attended by about 25 of our alumni, students and friends in the Northwest, including EdD alum William Bonaudi, Liz Northrop, and Marcus Luce, who completed the MAT program from a remote island in 2011 while serving in the Peace Corps.  One of the MAT program’s Seattle-based mentor teachers, Josephine Cripps of Pinehurst K-8, shared enthusiastic stories of the quality teaching candidates provided by Rossier.

The visit to her childhood city inspired Dean Gallagher to reflect on how growing up in Seattle shaped her current work to improve learning in high-need schools, and compelled her to author a personal piece on the topic, published on Crosscut.com.

Gallagher also taped an interview with news radio station KUOW during the trip, and met with Rossier friends Blair Taylor, former member of the board of councilors and current chief community officer for Starbucks; Don Shalvey EdD ‘95, deputy director for the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation; and Jose Banda, superintendent of Seattle Public Schools.

The Rossier on the Road events are wonderful opportunities to connect with fellow alumni and students in your area, learn about the latest Rossier news directly from Dean Gallagher, and find out how the school can continue to propel your career even further with networking and professional development. The gatherings also give Rossier Online students the chance to meet classmates in their area as well as their instructors in person. Rossier family and friends are encouraged to stay tuned for more Rossier on the Road events in 2013!
