MAT-TESOL ’12 alums Matthew Jellick & Linwood Bishop

MAT TESOL graduates Matthew Jellick (’12) and Linwood Bishop (’12) recently met up in Japan to reminisce about their experiences at Rossier have shaped their individual teaching careers.  Matthew is teaching at a high school in Korea, while Linwood is now principal of a school in Japan.  Each completed their Master’s through Rossier, focusing on TESOL- specifically teaching abroad- understanding that English language learners gain invaluable resources when able to communicate beyond their native tongue, and broaden their reach in this rapidly changing global world.

Returning back to Korea from a study-abroad program with his students in New Zealand, Matthew had an extended layover in Japan, where Linwood was able to meet him.  They sat down for a delicious sushi dinner, discussing their previous year in the MAT, and where it has led them both professionally and personally.  Remembering past courses, assignments, and classmates, it was nice to be able to catch up, and actually finally meet in person, as they had previously only known each other via the online platform.  Grateful for the opportunities the TESOL program gave them with their respective career paths, both are also aware of the effect it had on them as individuals as well.  Memories coupled with sips of warm Sake went to give credence to the power of the international reach of the MAT online program, enabling these two educators to cross paths, far across the Pacific from where they both came.  Global in its reach, but personal in its relations, the MAT@USC provided both Matthew and Linwood with endless possibilities, be it in Korea, Japan, California or North Carolina.  With trains leaving, and flights departing, they said their goodbyes, with plans to remain in touch, and meet again soon…
